Robison
Farm History
Robison Farms is a 5th
generation Family Farm, continuously operated for over 130 years. We are located
in Montgomery County in Southeast Georgia, USA, in the heart of the area designated
by the Department of Agriculture as the official Vidalia Onion Growing Region.
Our Farm was originally covered in pine forests. The most
fertile land was cleared and planted as crop growing fields. The original crop
was cotton which was widely planted until the arrival of the boll weevil. This
event occurred in the early 1920's and was devastating to the crops and the
area's economy.
It was during this period that our grandfather began
to plant pecan trees. These tree are still productive and are our primary crop.
Our father, John (Buddy) Robison Sr. increased the plantings three-fold. Since
that time we have continued planting and harvesting a pecan crop.
Pecans are a slow growing tree and there is a 15-20
year period between planting and the first harvest. In addition, pecan trees
have a tendency to produce cyclically, bearing heavily one year and then having
a smaller yield the following year. It was this phenomenon which motivated us
to begin growing Vidalia Sweet Onions. We also grow peanuts, corn and other
vegetables.
